of pieces of fan mail.
At Junior Highs and High Schools, Brandon Brown is a unique speaker
with a special story. He usually starts off by asking kids
what nationality they think he is. After taking guesses,
he tells them he is a mix of five different cultures. Most
of them aren’t normally guessed. He points out that in today’s
world, anybody can do anything. Regardless of where they
come from.
Brandon continues by asking who has plans for college. He
tells his story of how his parents, who didn’t go to college, wanted
him to go. After attending Harper, he tried out for the school
of music at Northern Illinois. He actually reenacts this by
playing the drums and then waiting for the call. He finds
out he beat out 40 kids and was ranked 15. Unfortunately,
only the top 8 make it. Brandon has a dilemma. He spent
3 hours a day for six months to prepare. He wanted his life
to be drumming. What could he do?
One of his main messages
is that life throws you roadblocks. When that happens, you
need to go around them or take a Detour. Brandon goes on to
explain how he tried out for the drum line and not only made it,
but wound up being it’s captain for 2 years. He also was invited
to play in the school’s steel drum band. So although he didn’t
get into the school of music, he did find a way to make drumming
a huge part of his life. He ends his story of success by describing
entering Ohio State University’s stadium filled with 104,000 people.
The band waits for the captain to start the band... The guy
who didn’t make the school of music. Brandon then wows
the crowd by playing the drums one last time.
